Understanding Shaft Length Calculations
Playing length is determined by BBGM plus the exposed shaft to the grip end. Insertion depth affects the raw shaft cut length but does not change the measured playing length.
What is BBGM?
Bottom of Bore to Ground Measurement is the distance from the bottom of the hosel bore to the ground line when the clubhead is at its designed lie angle. This measurement determines how much the clubhead contributes to final playing length.
Exposed Shaft Length
This is the portion of the shaft visible above the hosel bore after assembly. Formula: Exposed = PlayingLength - BBGM. This is what you actually see when the club is assembled.
Why Insertion Depth Matters
While insertion depth doesn't change playing length, it determines how long your raw shaft must be before installation. Deeper insertion requires a longer raw shaft to achieve the same playing length.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why doesn't insertion depth affect playing length?
Playing length is measured from the grip end to the ground - it's an external measurement. The insertion depth is internal (how far the shaft goes INTO the hosel) and doesn't change the external measurement. However, deeper insertion requires a longer raw shaft to achieve the same playing length.
How do I measure BBGM on my clubhead?
Place the clubhead on a flat surface at its designed lie angle. Measure vertically from the surface to the bottom of the hosel bore. Most manufacturers provide BBGM specifications, or you can contact them directly.
What is the USGA/R&A measurement method?
The club is placed on a 60° plane with the sole center touching. A ruler is placed along the shaft back, and length is measured from the plane to the grip cap edge. This is the industry standard for measuring playing length.
What if my raw shaft is too short?
If the butt trim calculation shows a negative number, your raw shaft is too short for the target playing length. You'll need to order a longer raw shaft or reduce your target playing length.
